More West Coast Storms
Hi, We are having more storms out here and high winds that are taking town trees left and right. Yesterday I woke up to no power and when I tried to leave our little valley to at least recharge my laptop, the way out at the main road was blocked in both directions with downed trees.
This morning there was still no power, but I was able to make it past the trees which had been cut just enough to let cars through single file in several places. Now I am finally in wood shop class on the Cabrillo College campus and fortunately, we have power here! Wood shop goes on!
I love wood almost as much as I love clay and making fine wooden boxes has always been a dream of mine. Three boxes are currently in progress. One will be maple, cherry, and walnut.
Meanwhile, as soon as I have power again, I will begin posting artists again. All of the files to do this are on the home computer, not this laptop.
Thanks! Catherine

8BellsScrimshandry - Handmade scrimshaw jewelry
Shaun Slifer is working out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in a craft so ancient, we have no way of knowing how far back it goes. Although the art of Scrimshaw refers to what was once the art of sailors working with whale bones and/or ivory, the art of carving on bone goes back much further than that. A dear friend once made a pair of feather shaped earrings for me out of carved bone and then used the art of Scrimshaw to work an inked feather design into their surface. So I am glad to see Shaun has continued in an ancient tradition. To see more of his pieces, you can use this link:

YourZenZone - Organic Lavender Wands
Eva Miller grows organic lavender in Canada and weaves it into multi-colored lavender wands. I am very impressed with the ones she makes using more than one color of ribbon because I know from experience that it is not an easy thing to do. The Victorian ladies began weaving the lavender from their herb gardens into wands to preserve the lavender and use it to scent their homes. Only fresh lavender can be used to make these. The flowers are still on the stem when they are woven, so the when the flowers dry and fall off of the stems, they are all held safely in the ribbon basket which has been woven around them. To release the scent, just gently roll the end with the flowers in it between the two palms of your hands. These can last for many, many years! I hope you visit her store by using this link: YourZenZone
